United in Purpose, Divided by Distance

When a team is physically divided but united in purpose, intentional connection becomes crucial. This was the challenge facing the Olathe Advanced Tech Center as they kicked off their 2024-2025 school year—a challenge they chose to meet head-on through partnership with Better Humans.
The Foundation: Excellence in Technical Education
The Olathe Advanced Technology Center exists to prepare and empower junior and senior students for success in today’s most demanding career fields. Through comprehensive two-year programs, they blend hands-on learning experiences with industry-standard equipment and real-world business partnerships. Their unique fusion of academic knowledge and technical training creates powerful educational experiences across multiple high-demand industries, positioning students for success whether they enter the workforce directly or pursue higher education.
The Challenge: When Physical Distance Creates Emotional Barriers
Behind this innovative educational model lies a team navigating its own challenges. Operating across three distinct locations, this dynamic group of educators faces the natural hurdles of a distributed workforce. Nine staff members in one building, six in another, and two in a third—this physical separation created unintended silos that impacted team cohesion.
The team itself represents a rich tapestry of experience and perspective, spanning multiple generations from 25 to 60 years of age. While some bring fresh perspectives as new instructors, others contribute valuable industry experience. This diversity holds immense potential for innovative collaboration—if the physical divides could be bridged.

The Solution: Intentional Connection and Communication
Better Humans designed an experience that balanced enjoyable connection with essential communication and team development. The program began with purposeful activities that went beyond surface-level introductions, encouraging staff to share their career aspirations and personal journeys through thought-provoking questions:
- What drew you to this career pathway?
- What does success look like to you?
- What skills do you hope to develop?
These seemingly simple prompts created natural bridges between team members, dissolving the awkwardness that often accompanies new relationships. Team-based initiatives followed, helping staff discover not just names, but the unique strengths each person brings to their role within the Olathe School District.
The Impact: From Disconnection to Unity
The transformation became evident through both observable changes and personal testimonials. As one staff member shared: “Our team has grown so much since our collaboration. We have learned about each other and ourselves. This growth has staff members that would have never spoken in a professional development feel comfortable to share their perspectives and experiences. Personally, I have grown from this activity as an administrator. I don’t just go into a meeting with the objective to attack. I am thoughtful about the environment, their leadership style, and how they would prefer to communicate.”
Through carefully designed communication challenges, the team moved beyond theoretical scenarios to experience real problem-solving together. What started as separate groups working in different buildings has evolved into a cohesive team united in their mission to provide excellence in technical education.
