NKC Catalyst Program
Some moments remind us just how powerful young people can be when given space to grow. That’s what we saw during our time with the North Kansas City School District Catalyst Program.
Seventy-two juniors and seniors gathered for a half-day experience built around leadership, communication, and self-confidence. These students are bright, driven, and full of potential. Many are the first in their families to pursue college—and all of them are aspiring to take the next big step in their future.
The goal? Build leadership. Grow confidence. Learn how to show up with courage—in interviews, in relationships, and in life.
At Better Humans, we know that leadership doesn’t come from a textbook. It comes from experience. So we got moving. Through interactive challenges, partner activities, and full-group reflections, the Catalyst students practiced the kinds of skills that matter—like collaboration, active listening, and the ability to step into discomfort with support and confidence.
The students were guided through interactive experiences designed to stretch them out of their comfort zones. They worked together. They made new connections. They practiced how to communicate with others—and how to lead from wherever they are.
By the end of the day, we saw students who had started quietly now speaking with confidence. A few shared how they had made new friends from other schools. The room was full of laughter, insight, and real reflection.
One program leader told us:
“This experience will definitely add value to the Catalyst program. It helped our students with skills they need and gave them confidence to face future obstacles.”
The students didn’t just participate—they embraced the challenge. And in doing so, they grew.
We’re proud to have played a small part in a much bigger mission. When students step into leadership, they not only change their own future—they inspire others to do the same.
This is the kind of learning that sticks. And it’s exactly what today’s students need.
