From Connection to Capacity: How Shawnee Mission Education Foundation and Better Humans LLC Strengthen Leadership for Student Impact

For The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation (SMEF), leadership is more than governance—it’s a commitment to collaboration and clarity. “Because Kids” is the theme for the ‘25-’26 school year emphasizing that, at the heart of all of the district’s work, are children and their bright futures. That’s why the Foundation partnered with Better Humans LLC to design a customized team development experience for its Board. With five new members joining the group, the timing was ideal to strengthen relationships, surface individual strengths, and build a shared foundation for impact.

Better Humans LLC brought its signature approach to experiential learning, crafting a session that invited Board members to move beyond titles into authentic connection. Through interactive exercises and reflective dialogue, participants explored how they show up as leaders—and how they can support one another more intentionally.

Bridging Strengths and Strategy

Boards often operate with high-level vision and strategic oversight. But without intentional investment in team dynamics, even the most mission-driven groups can miss opportunities for deeper alignment. The SMEF recognized this and leaned into the experience with openness and curiosity.

Better Humans tailored the session to meet the SMEF’s unique composition: seasoned members with years of service, and fresh voices bringing new energy. Activities were designed to highlight individual leadership styles, uncover blind spots, and foster trust across the team. Whether navigating a group challenge or sharing personal reflections, each moment was an invitation to grow together.

Trust, Transparency, and Teamwork

As the experience unfolded, the transformation could be seen and felt. Board members began engaging in meaningful dialogue. New members found their voice, while veteran leaders discovered new ways to mentor and collaborate. The group moved from congenial to cohesive—from knowing each other to truly understanding one another.

One participant reflected, “…the conversations about trust and accountability will serve us well going forward. The activities spanned the breadth of ‘getting to know you’ and really inspiring conversations about each individuals’ role in the organization and how they are going to contribute to the good of the cause. I think it opens the door for some conversations when people aren’t holding up their end of the bargain–framing it in a way that harkens back to the importance of reliability and accountability within the trust framework”.

A Foundation for Future Impact

By the end of the session, the SMEF’s Board laid groundwork for deeper collaboration, clearer communication, and more intentional leadership. The goal is not just to govern effectively, but to lead with empathy, purpose, and shared accountability.

Better Humans LLC continues to support organizations like the SMEF in turning leadership potential into performance. When mission-driven teams invest in connection, they don’t just strengthen their board—they amplify their impact across the entire community.
