Breaking Down Silos One Connection At A Time

Do any of the following symptoms sound familiar to you?

  • Frequent complaints without solutions
  • Passive-aggressive emails full of misunderstanding and tension
  • “Water cooler gossip” replacing productive conversations with toxic chatter
  • Increased missed deadlines or poor business outcomes
  • Employee disengagement through tardiness and an increased requests for paid time off

If so, your team might be struggling with disconnection and departmental silos. These slowly erode trust and inhibit the team’s ability to get things done well. Addressing this disconnect requires more than superficial fixes; it demands a commitment (or re-commitment) to authentic connection.

We have office all-hands meetings and retreats, how are we still so disconnected?

Disconnection within teams can sneak by unnoticed, slowly disrupting the harmony and collaboration required for effective teamwork over time. It looks like team members withholding vital information due to a philosophy of total self-reliance, individuals disengaging from their organizations when you need them most and eventually some of the highest potential talent walking out the door. This churn of employees physically and mentally erodes the foundation of trust required to thrive because employees no longer know if they will have all the information and people they need to succeed.

Leaders will try to bridge this uncertainty with statements like “help us solve this” or “remember we are all in this together”. Less attuned leaders will assume that a retreat of shared experience, such as bowling, will fix the disconnection problem. However, just because an organization says, “ you belong” or creates forced bonding does not automatically result in employees experiencing felt connection or psychological safety.

So if the upcoming all hands meeting isn’t the solution. What is? We are glad you asked!

Shared Time vs. Shared Experience

Rebuilding a team’s sense of safety and connection isn’t an overnight fix. It requires intentional effort and structured strategies that create opportunities for authentic engagement. This is where organizations like Better Humans come into play. Through fun, structured team experiences, we offer teams the chance to reconnect in meaningful ways. This program differs from retreats you might have partaken in because they provide the fun of an escape room or volunteer day with the opportunity to learn, reflect and apply. Better Humans works directly with your team to hone communication skills, develop an open mindset, and consider alternate perspectives through problem solving activities all of which contribute to breaking down silos. As participants tackle a challenge, they are also invited to reflect on questions like these:

  • What led to your success here that might lead to success at the office?
  • What new strengths did you learn about in a colleague that you want to rely on more?
  • Who made you laugh?

These simple questions pause participants long enough to apply their experience forward and that is the fundamental work we do. We move from shared time to shared experience. We solve challenges. We reflect. We grow. For teams that value data, assessments such as the DiSC, Clifton Strengths, or the 5 Behaviors of a Cohesive team can make the initial conversation less overwhelming and the information more applicable.

With structured activities and an outside perspective fostering connection, communication can become more transparent. This helps employees feel valued, which increases engagement with each other and with their work, thus creating a positive spiral of connection.

It Works If You Work It

Frustration can arise when immediate results aren’t evident. Leaders may wonder, “Why isn’t this working? I’ve been connecting with staff for days now, and they’re still showing up late.” Patience is key—authentic connection requires consistency and persistence. If your team has struggled with silos for years, it will take time for them to trust that change is permanent. By prioritizing safety and authenticity, teams can rediscover their sense of belonging, transforming workplaces into environments of trust, collaboration, and growth.

Authentic connection is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. You have the capacity to make a difference and, if you feel overwhelmed, Better Humans is here to help along the way. We have free resources, consultations and programming to help you finally create lasting change in how your teams interact with each other and the work.
